Drašnice

Drasnice is a small tourist resort and fishermen`s village situated on the Makarska Riviera just 12km south of the town of Makarska. A small fishermen’s village is at the foot of the Mountain of Biokovo.

Drasnice is situated about 75 km south of the city of Split and 150 km north of the UNESCO world heritage town of Dubrovnik.

The name Drasnice is coming from the word “thorn”, as thorns used to grow in most parts of Dalmatia. For the first time Drasnice were mentioned in Turkish documents at the end of the 15th century. However, there exist proofs of life in this area older than 8000 years.

The uniqueness of Drasnice is created by old stone houses at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain, nowadays called old village. In the 1960. the inhabitants decided to abandon this village and move down to the sea in order to have an easier life and to host the first tourists visiting this area. In the past the people in this region lived of  fishing, trade and agriculture. This is witnessed by different types of tools used for cultivating olive trees, fishing, etc.

Today they are turning to  tourism and they live of it.

Everything is situated close: market, post office, restaurants, cafes, bus station.

  • You can visit  Biokovo  and there is the beautiful view points from which you can see the whole city of Makarska and the surrounding islands Hvar, Brac and peninsula Peljesac . When the weather is clear it is even possible to see the contours of the Italian coast. The highest peak is Sv. Jure 1762 m. Another beauty of this mountain is the botanic garden with endemic plants.

You can visit Split which is on the UNESCO`s list of cultural heritage. It  is only one hour by car from Drasnice. The famous Diocletian palace with more than 1700 years gives great opportunities for sightseeing. Split is the trade and administrative center of Dalmatia.
