Drniš

Drniš is a town in Croatia and it is near the river Krka. Its first mention was in 15th century.

There are remains of medieval fortress Gradina with the tower in the upper part of the town over the valley of the river Čikola.

• Drniš is rich with religious monuments. There are  four Catholic churches – The Church of St. Anthony, Church St.Rocho, the parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the church St. John the Baptist   and two Orthodox churches – the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Church Archangel Michael.

 There are traces of older Middle Ages’ fortress built by Croatian aristocrat family Nelipić. This place is called Gradina. The town was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1522 due to its strategic location. Many buildings from this time period are still preserved today. During the Baroque period, the mosque built by the Turks was transformed into a church.

The town of Drniš is known for works of art of the great Croatian artist Ivan Meštrović that grew up in the village Otavice near Drniš, where his mausoleum is situated today.
